3rd Grade Water Filters

I was approached by our 3rd grade teachers and asked to help with their science unit about water and water filters. I made an template with a pre-measured filter and a variety of holes and slots for the students to use. We had a whole class lesson on using Inkscape. I showed them how to duplicate and move and then gave them the freedom to create their own filter. Some students played around and realized you could make the shape bigger by grabbing a corner or end and dragging it. Other kids figured out you could highlight a group of holes/slots and duplicate the whole group. They also discovered you can angle the items by just grabbing the corner and moving it.

In the end, we had 16 different filters for them to use. I cut them out of thin (.093inch) acrylic and the students used them in their water filter experiments in science class.

The students used the filters they made as part of a larger water filter to see how clean they could make dirty water.
