At the start of the school year we offered each grade level mini-lesson specific to them. After getting a 90 minute mini-lesson on how to use Scratch Jr., our second grade team started thinking of ways to allow the students to use this app as part of the curriculum. They came up with the idea of having the students create "games" at the end of various units of study. These "games" would allow the student so show what they learned. The games had to be on topic and allow the "player" to test their knowledge. For example, in math, students had to make "games" that would challenge the "players" knowledge of 2 digit by 2 digit subtraction.
