Third Grade: Design Thinking/Making Caddie Project-Week 2

In week 2, caddie pieces continue to be designed using BoxDesigner & Inkscape and then cut on the laser cutter. Putting pieces together and making adjustments to their design, is all part of the improvement step of the design process for these 3rd graders.

Here, these students are using the app Seesaw to document the process of creating their caddies. Using pictures, video and text, they are keeping a record of what they are doing.

Once their final pieces were cut, it was time to create.

Here are some of the final caddies:

Final Versions - 6th Grade Ancient Egyptian Artifiacts

We had over 60 sixth graders come into the Lab over the past 3 weeks to design and create ancient Egyptian artifacts for a class project. Using 3D design software & 3D printers, and  vector graphics software & a laser cutter, these students came up with some amazing things. Here are just a few of the ones on display in our library.

Third Grade: Design Thinking/Making Caddie Project-Week 1

This great idea comes straight from our third grade teachers. Starting with a box of various items (pencils, pens, erasers, etc.) on their table, third graders had to come up with a solution to organize their supplies. First they asked questions, then imagined ideas, came up with a plan, created a prototype, test it, improved it...

Then, they came to the Lab.

Students were taught how to use Inkscape to design laser cut shapes and objects (like boxes). Then they set off to design their final version on the computer before it could be cut out of wood.

Sixth Grade Ancient Egyptian Artifacts Project

The first major project to come to the Lab this year had to do with the sixth grade study of ancient civilizations, in particular, ancient Egypt. Students were challenged to research an ancient Egyptian artifact to create. They could do it at home or in school, so the Lab is always an option. Last week, 6th graders started flooding into the Lab wanting to 3D print or laser cut a variety of artifacts. Below are pictures of some of our students and the artifacts they are working on. Check back for more artifacts and for what these artifacts look like when the students are finished with the final versions.
